COVID-19 numbers are headed back upward in the Western Upper Peninsula.
The latest report from the Western U.P. Health Department includes 77 new confirmed positives since the previous update was released December 28th. That’s more than the previous two weeks combined.
40 were in Houghton County, 16 in Baraga County, nine each in Gogebic and Keweenaw Counties, and three in Ontonagon County. 346 recoveries have been confirmed.
Three more of our neighbors have died – two in Houghton County, and one in Gogebic County. That brings the pandemic death toll to 118 for the five-county region. See the full report here.
New COVID-19 cases were minimal at local long term care facilities. Only two staff member diagnoses were reported – one at PortagePointe, and one at Canal View. Canal View reported one death from a previously diagnosed case. NOTE: PortagePointe officials notified us that the state website incorrectly identified its diagnosis as a resident, and not a staff member. Our story has been updated to reflect that.
No report was included for Bayside Village in L’Anse. Aspirus Ontonagon’s long term care unit reported no new cases.
After falling for more than a month, Michigan’s diagnosis trend has also begun to swing back upward. The seven-day rolling average yesterday rose to 3,105 diagnoses per day, after dipping below 2,500 a week ago. The seven-day rolling average of deaths per day held basically steady, at 84.
