Local COVID-19 Case Rate Holds Steady

The number of diagnosed COVID-19 cases held steady in the Copper Country again last week.

Michigan Department of Health and Human Services figures show 49 confirmed cases in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties last week, compared to 51 the week before.

Statewide, diagnoses continued to ebb, with the average number of confirmed cases per day falling below 1,400 for the first time since mid-April. An average of 19 people per day died in Michigan last week because of COVID-related causes.

Scientists are tracking an increasing number of new COVID-19 variants, some of which are proving resistant to current vaccines, and there is concern that another outbreak could take hold this winter.

Officials caution that the actual infection rate could be substantially higher. Results from home tests are frequently not reported, and cases with mild symptoms may go undiagnosed. Even those experiencing no symptoms can still spread the virus to others.
