Local Businesses Benefit from COVID-19 Assistance

More than 11,300 businesses and nonprofits in Michigan have been awarded grants totaling $69 million to help offset COVID-19 losses.

In Hancock yesterday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the grants were funneled through local economic development organizations via the Michigan Small Business Restart Grant Program…

“This program was launched to provide relief for small businesses that have been impacted by COVID-19, particularly women-, veteran-owned, and minority-owned businesses.”

The money originated with CARES Act funding from the federal government.

In the Copper Country…
 • In Houghton County, 89 businesses shared $475,500 in grants.
• In Baraga County, 20 businesses shared $120,750 in grants.
• In Keweenaw County, seven organizations shared $30,277 in grants.
 • In Ontonagon County, 11 businesses shared $95,000 in grants.

Whitmer said the money was provided to help, but the ultimate solution to keeping our local businesses healthy is in our hands…

“The best thing that we can do to help our small businesses is help keep them open by keeping our COVID numbers down.”
