Seniors who typically get help filling out their income tax forms at the Portage Lake District Library will not have the opportunity this year.
The service provided by AARP will not be offered, because of COVID-19 concerns.
Library Director Dillon Geshel says they’ve received dozens of calls asking about the service, and are sorry that it won’t be available. Geshel says around 500 seniors take advantage of the program each year.
There are a couple of alternatives.
Houghton’s Community Action Agency is offering assistance in filing state and federal income tax returns for persons who are income eligible. Call 482-5528 or email bhkfk@att.net.
Free filing options are also available online from the IRS, although there are income eligibility requirements. Visit the IRS Free File website to learn more.
