Limited Sports Gambling Now Legal in Michigan

Michigan will allow legal gambling on sports.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a series of bills Friday that will make Michigan the 20th state in the nation to allow sports betting.

Native American tribes who operate casinos and other private businesses that have casino licenses will be able to offer sports gaming.

State officials say it will take several months to draw up the operating rules. It’s anticipated that on-site betting will begin first, with online wagering through casino websites to follow.

The move is not expected to bring a huge financial windfall to the state. Michigan Treasury officials estimate the annual revenue at $19 million. Some of that money will go to the school aid fund, and some to a fund that will support first responders who develop job-related cancer.
