When someone is contemplating suicide, they are in need of help right away before it’s too late.
Dial Help instructor Krissy Putz says we need to treat potential suicide as we would any other medical emergency. “We want to train a lot of people in the community to be able to intervene and help someone who is thinking about suicide and the more people that we can get trained in the community, the more suicide-safer our community is,” said Putz.
Dial Help is offering a two-day program called Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. Participants will learn to recognize signs of suicide, how to offer support, and how to link someone at risk with resources for help.
Putz says there is a difference between prevention and intervention. “We know that even with prevention activities, some folks in our community are still going to have thoughts of suicide and they’re still going to have struggles because suicide is very individual,” Putz said.
Space is limited and advance registration is required. To register, contact Krissy Putz at 482-9077 or kputz@dialhelp.org. The course normally costs $125.00, but registration for this session is only $20.00.
The class will be held April 11th and 12th from 8:30am to 4:30pm at UP Health System-Portage.
