Hancock, Michigan – The City of Hancock was awarded a $3,000 grant to upgrade the Laurn Grove outdoor ice rink as a part of Keweenaw Community Foundation’s (KCF) Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Spring 2017 granting cycle.
In the spring of 2017, the City of Hancock was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Kellogg Youth Fund at Keweenaw Community Foundation to upgrade the ice skating boards at the historic outdoor Laurn-Grove ice rink. The year prior, the City of Hancock was awarded another grant from the YAC to install LED lighting at the ice rink. To continue with improvements of the Laurn Grove facilities, the purpose of their latest project was to place a 3/8” fiberglass dasher facing on the inside surface of the rink to increase the longevity of the pressure treated wood and to further brighten up the ice surface. The fiberglass facing will absorb the impact of the pucks and the contrast of the puck or ball will be more readily visible with the white background, just like an arena rink. The dasher facing surface will also protect the bottom of the pressure treated lumber from wood rot from flooding of the rink in the winter time.
The City of Hancock selected Becker Arena Products, Inc. of Savage, MN to be the supplier for the new 3/8” poly white facing dasher boards. The City DPW Crew installed the 50 sheets in Mid-November, and the project was completed on November 17, 2017. In addition to the grant amount of $3,000 from KCF’s YAC, the City contributed $3,512.50 toward the project in cash as well as in-kind work by the DPW Crew.
Laurn Grove ice rink is the City’s only outdoor winter ice rink, and is heavily used by both recreational ice skaters and hockey players from the community. Being able to attach the poly sheet facing onto the existing wooden boards will significantly extend the life of the boards for public use. The ice rink is also used extensively in the summer for basketball and street hockey.
