Laurium Pushes Blight Fight – Village Council Wrap

Laurium is taking active steps to clean up the village.

At last night’s meeting, village council members received an update about the latest effort to combat blight. Village President John Sullivan and Police Chief Kurt Erkkila recently met with county officials, to refine the procedures the village will use to enforce their ordinance.

Notices have begun to go out to residents with broken down vehicles and other trash and unsightly materials in their yards.

The village has several board vacancies that need to be filled. Two members of the planning commission recently resigned. Anyone interested in serving should contact village staff. Applications to fill the village council seat recently vacated by Glenn Johnson must be submitted by close of business Friday. That term runs through November.

In other action at last night’s meeting, the council allocated $250 to help maintain the snowshoe trails at Calumet Lions Park, and recognized Steve Wright of U.P. Engineers and Architects as the village’s new contact for Dangerous Building Ordinance inspections.
