Laurium Prepares Grant/Loan Requests

The Village of Laurium held two public hearings last night as part of its application to get some federal money.

The village is asking for a $19,800 Rural Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help purchase a new police car. The village would add another $16,000 to complete the purchase.

The village is also applying for a $400,000 Rural Development loan to help pay for some street improvements.

Village Administrator Ed Vertin said that some state grant money has also been made available for the project, which would include parts of Old Colony Road, First Street, and a small portion of Calumet Street.

The estimated total cost of the project is $475,000 to $500,000. The Rural Development loan would be paid off through the regular street budget.

If approved, the work will be done next summer.
