Laurium Girl Scout Earns Gold Award

A Girl Scout from Laurium is among those being recognized by the Girls Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes.

Laura Lyons earned the Girl Scout Gold Award with her project, The Medicine of the Future is Our Food.

In describing her project, Laura said, “My project focused on the health of our community and helping those with food intolerances and irritable bowel syndrome. Along with creating a website that contained multiple diets that may help solve the problem, I also held a presentation where I spoke about the issue to help spread awareness and make an impact in the community.”

The award also recognizes Lyons’ leadership and citizenship skills and the impact she is making on the community.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is truly a remarkable achievement, and these young women exemplify leadership in all its forms,” said Karmen Lemke, chief executive officer of GSNWGL. “They saw a need in their communities and around the world and took action. Their extraordinary dedication, perseverance, and leadership is making the world a better place.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn.

Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award Girl Scouts, and girls who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.

Lyons will be recognized at the organization’s Girl Scouts of Distinction event this Saturday at Northern Michigan University, the annual celebration of Gold Award Girl Scouts, those receiving Girl Scouting’s other highest awards – Bronze and Silver, and volunteers receiving adult awards.
