Laurium Delays Gipp Opening, Considers Holiday Contest

The three-week COVID-19 pause will delay the ice-making process at the George Gipp Arena.

At last night’s Laurium village council meeting, administrator Ed Vertin said there’s no point in making ice while the building can’t be used.

With the prospect that the pause could be extended, Vertin said it could be tricky trying to plan for an immediate opening…

“You’re going to wind up with a catch-22, because of the timing, It takes two days just to cool it down, and four to five days to lay the ice.”

When ice is installed, Zamboni drivers at the Gipp will make a bit more. The council voted to raise the pay to $11.00 per hour.

Vertin also told council members that the village’s new police vehicle has arrived.

Council members decided to place a bid on a used SnoGo being auctioned off by the State of Wisconsin. It’s similar to aging equipment the village already owns, and could be used for parts.

And, the council decided to look into organizing a Christmas home decorating contest. Council member Amy Schneiderhan will lead that effort.
