Larson Returns as Houghton County Administrator

Ben Larson will return as Houghton County Administrator.

Larson was hired yesterday, as the county board of commissioners moved quickly to replace the departing Elizabeth Bjorn.

Bjorn replaced Larson in the job just 18 months ago, when Larson took a job in the private sector. She is leaving April 30th.

Board Chair Tom Tikkanen encouraged commissioners to forgo the traditional hiring process, and look for candidates who already had knowledge of Houghton County government issues…

An effort was made to reach out to people that had demonstrated above-average capacity for personnel and/or financial management, which are key attributes for a county administrator.

That outreach produced interest from Larson, and County Transfer Station Manager Curtis Judson. County accountant Becky Ylitalo was also approached, but declined to apply.

Tikkanen said the sense of urgency came from two sources. First…

I think it’s imperative that our new person spend time, for lack of a better word, being trained by our outgoing administrator.

Bjorn added that significant projects involving American Rescue Plan Act funds are underway, with tight deadlines and critical reporting upcoming…

Certain requirements have to be established. User roles take weeks sometimes for the state to recognize certain roles, and projects have to be built.

While Larson served only a year in his previous term as administrator, he noted that he had worked on several significant issues, including expansion of the transfer station, erosion issues at the Houghton County Marina, and, of course, the potential new jail and district court…

I know that you guys have made a move to solidify the Sharon Avenue property. If selected, I would like to work with you, and help you raise some money for that project, if that’s something you choose to do, if we’re going to go for the new jail and the new courthouse project. That was started back in my time, but you guys got that done, and I applaud you on that.

Tikkanen applauded Bjorn’s 10 years of service to the county, including her term as administrator…

Elizabeth Bjorn has an extraordinary administrator, and continued a very high degree of professionalism and organization with the administration department.

Other commissioners joined him in wishing her well.
