A chemical reaction caused by something in the soil is being blamed for some serious corrosion affecting some of the village’s fire hydrants.
At last night’s village council meeting, water system leadman Lyle Olson explained that the problem affects as many as eight or 10 hydrants along US-41 west of the Falls River, along with some other joints in that area.
He brought several of the badly corroded bolts that were recently replaced when one of the junctions they secured failed.
Olson said the village is replacing the old bolts with Cor-Blue bolts that are specially coated to resist corrosion. Stainless steel is also an option, but is much more expensive.
Village President Ron Ervast reminded residents that the Baraga County Emergency Service Community Picnic will be held Saturday from noon until 4. This year’s event has been moved to Meadowbrook Park, and will feature bouncies for the kids, hot dogs, and a lot of the county’s fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles.
This year’s Boo! On The Bay celebration has been set for October 11th. Kids will be able to trick-or-treat at downtown merchants.
