L’Anse Hopes for MSP Return – Village Council Wrapup

The L’Anse village council has thrown its support behind an effort to reestablish a presence by the Michigan State Police in Baraga County.

The former L’Anse State Police post.

There was a post in L’Anse from 1935 through 2011, when budget problems forced the state to shut it down.

Last night, Baraga County Road Commission manager Doug Mills told council members that the MSP is considering a satellite office. Council members endorsed the idea. Other Baraga County governmental agencies are being asked for support, as well.

The former post building remains vacant, and has been offered for sale by the state. Other locations are apparently also being considered.

In other action, the council changed an ordinance to allow state officials to continue to conduct electrical inspections in the village. The electrical inspector’s position has been vacant since Dominic Picciano passed away in 2018. No local person has shown an interest in taking the job.

The village will replace a large culvert on Wood Yard Road, behind Acciacca Forest Products. Council members awarded the job to M.D. Contracting, at a cost of $32,000. Work will likely begin by mid-summer, and be completed by fall.

Council members thanked Greg Kingstrom of U.P. Engineers and Architects, who has worked closely with the village on a number of projects in recent years. Kingstrom is taking a new job with the Keweenaw County Road Commission.
