L’Anse Council Salutes Holiday Fire First Responders

Members of the L’Anse village council took time at last night’s meeting to thank all those who battled the explosion and fire at the Holiday gas station October 13th…

I commend our fire department. I commend all the fire departments that came to help, and I commend our water plant guys and any of the village guys that were out and about, because it was an all-hands-on-deck situation.

That’s village President Ron Ervast, who noted that crews poured around a quarter-million gallons of water onto the blaze.

Ervast, who is a firefighter himself, said the all-night effort brought home the need to recruit some younger members…

I think that teh age of our department is probably mid to late 40s. We’ve got a couple of young guys on there, but that’s it.

He said state certification requirements are making recruiting challenging…

With the state requiring 266 hours of training within the first two years to get on the department, it’s hard to recruit because it isn’t a job, it’s volunteering. So you have your current job, you have your family, and then you have to find time to put, I think that’s eight weeks of training in to get certified to be a volunteer fireman.

The inferno was caused when a truck crashed through the pumps at the station, and into the store. L’Anse resident Allan Dantes, Jr., was killed. The driver of the truck, Dawaun Johnson, is reported to be back home in Illinois after posting bail. He’s charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death.
