L’Anse Council Receives Meadowbrook Grant

The L’Anse village council happily acknowledged receipt of a $150,000 state grant to help pay for new boards and glass at Meadowbrook Arena last evening.

Village Manager Bob LaFave confirmed the news…

It’s something that should set up our rink for decades to come, and there should be skating and hockey for a long time in our area.

LaFave indicated this will be the first time Meadowbrook will have boards and glass specifically designed for its rink. The money is coming from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Recreation Passport fund.

At last night’s meeting, the council also approved two applications for DNR Spark grants to assist in renovation of the village marina. A $1.2 million request would rebuild a seawall, and establish a kayak launch. A $100,000 back-up request would cover just the cost of the kayak launch. Spark grants can cover up to 100 percent of the cost of a project, and LaFave acknowledged that competition for them is fierce…

It’s just like playing the lottery. A dollar and a dream, but you’ve got to play in order to get a crack at it.

The L’Anse Township Board was also present at last night’s session. Both the village and township approved their joint 2023-2027 Recreation Plan.
