L’Anse Approves New Master Plan – Village Council Wrap

A new master plan is now in place for the Village of L’Anse.

After months of work, and several public input sessions, the 105-page document was approved by the village council last evening.

The plan evaluates the village as it currently stands. It also lays out some goals, including the development of new housing, continuing investment in parks and trails, more updating of facades in the downtown area, and a proposed project that would upgrade L’Anse Avenue into a welcoming village “gateway.”

Cities and villages in Michigan are required to update their master plans every five years, in order to be eligible for several types of grants.

The updated plan can be viewed at the village website.

In other action, the council chose an Indiana company, National Industrial Maintenance, to coordinate the next step in searching for lead water service lines in the village. The $239,005 cost will be covered by a grant from the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. It’s part of an ongoing statewide effort to locate and replace lead water lines, which can cause health problems. To this point, no significant problems have been found within the village.

Council members also took a moment to remember former trustee Jim Hulkinen, who passed away Saturday at age 80. They noted his sense of humor, his offbeat approach to village government, and his deep love for the community.
