U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service personnel are scheduled to apply lampricides in several area streams beginning today.
In Baraga County, Fossum Creek south of Skanee and the Little Carp River in Baraga Township will be treated. In Houghton County, lampricides will be applied to Dover Creek – also known as Hungarian Creek – near Tamarack City, along with an area just offshore in Torch Lake.
Applications should be complete in about seven days. The dates are tentative, and may be changed based upon weather or stream conditions.
Treatments are designed to control the lamprey population by killing larvae that are burrowed in the riverbeds.
