The 2022 Lake Superior shipping season has officially closed.
The Poe Lock at Sault Ste. Marie shut down for the winter late last night. The final freighter to pass through was the Joseph L. Block, downbound to Toledo.
The MacArthur Lock closed for the season a month ago.
Crews will begin maintenance on the Poe, including replacing the hinges on the upstream gates.
The locks are scheduled to reopen March 26th.
Spring will also bring the start of Phase Three of construction of the new lock at the Soo, which is scheduled to be completed in 2030.
