KORC Reports Successful Keweenaw Clean-Up

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition is hailing a successful clean-up effort last Saturday. More than 70 volunteers picked up a ton of trash from streets and trails across Keweenaw County.

The KORC is encouraging residents to help keep those areas, and the entire Copper Country, clean this summer.

Copper Harbor, MI — The 2nd Annual KORC Keweenaw Clean-Up that took place on Saturday, May 21, 2022 was a great success. With a goal of helping the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local municipalities clean up roads and other public areas, KORC put out the call for volunteers. Over 70 volunteers came out to help collect over a ton of trash from areas like High Rock Bay, the Mandan Road, Schlatter Lake, Fish Cove, Hunter’s Point, Brockway Mountain Drive, Manganese Bridge Road, Clark Mine, The Delaware Shortcut, Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor streets, and motorized trails.

Thanks to the efforts of these volunteers and others, our beautiful Keweenaw is ready for the summer season. Please do your part to help maintain clean views along beaches, roads, trails and parks by disposing of all trash and recycling responsibly.

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition (KORC) would like to thank all volunteers who participated and KORC steering committee members who helped facilitate the event. The Mariner North provided food and refreshments for the community cookout in Donny Kilpela Memorial Park. Trash bags and gloves were donated by Ace Hardware of Calumet and Grant Township. Members from the Keweenaw ATV Club, Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat (KOAR), Copper Harbor Trails Club, and Eagle Harbor Township, Copper Harbor community, Calumet Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club and many others put in hours of work across the Keweenaw. Several organizations and businesses in Copper Harbor provided support and donated door prizes. These included The Genny, The Fitz, Keweenaw Adventure Company, The Mariner North, KOAR, Stewards of Bete Grise Preserve (SBGP), KORC, and Rock Solid Trails Contracting.

KORC’s mission is to protect Keweenaw for everyone, forever. All members of the public, organizations, and businesses are welcome to join in supporting that mission and participating in our community events. Find more information and become a member at www.keweenawoutdoorrecreation.org
