KNA Appeals for Donations to Complete Shoreline Purchase

Keweenaw Natural Areas is appealing to the public for donations to help complete the purchase of its Merganser Pond North area.

Merganser Pond North is contiguous with the KNA’s existing Merganser Pond preserve. It includes 80 acres with a third of a mile of Lake Superior shoreline. It’s located between Gratiot River County Park and Five Mile Point in Keweenaw County.

Developers were ready to divide the property into lots 18 months ago, but a benefactor loaned KNA $872,500 to purchase the land. Repayment of that loan is due by the end of this year.

A combination of major donations and matching grants has reduced the amount needed to complete the payoff to $17,500. KNA is asking for donations to help seal the deal, and keep the land available for public use.

Contributions can be made online here.

Checks can be mailed to KNA, PO Box 124, Calumet, MI 49913, but please send them immediately, so they arrive by the end of the year.

The KNA’s existing 400 acre Merganser Pond preserve is at the bottom. The Merganser Pond North area is at the upper left. The area outlined in red is private property.
