Klondike Park Upgrade Coming – Hancock Council Wrap

A small, little-used Hancock Park will be getting a facelift.

Last night, the city council accepted an $8,500 grant to purchase a piece of play equipment for Klondike Park.

Klondike Park is located near the entrance to Sylvan Estates, a bit north of the historic Klondike Location. It’s never been developed, and even many council members hadn’t heard of it.

The grant was originally intended for the city campground, but couldn’t be used there.

Residents around Klondike Park had been asking for something. This is what they’ll get:

In other actions, the Hancock council approved an increase in cemetery fees, and awarded the contract for re-roofing the million gallon water tank to McGrath, Incorporated. The $56,400 bid came in well below what was expected. Most or all will be covered by grants and insurance.

City Manager Mary Babcock told the council that there have been no applications for the current vacancy on the city’s Downtown Development Authority. If you’re interested, touch base with city hall.

Also at last night’s meeting, City Manager Mary Babcock shared concern that the continued high water levels in the Portage are causing some serious shoreline erosion. A 35-foot stretch of waterfront property the city owns in front of the Ramada Inn has been washed away to the point where owners of the hotel are becoming concerned. Babcock says they’re looking onto potential remedies, including adding rip rap to the shoreline.
