Keweenaw County Appoints New Equalization Director, Approves Trailer Purchase

Keweenaw County has a new equalization director.

At last night’s county board meeting, commissioners accepted the resignation of Elizabeth Anderson…

I have loved my 10 years here. I love equalization. I didn’t know what it was when I started, and it has been, by far, my favorite job.

Mark Niemela will take over as equalization director. Like Anderson when she started, he has little experience. Board members discussed ways to accelerate the training he will need to get up to speed.

In other action, the board accepted a bid for a new rescue trailer for the sheriff’s department. The $24,285 cost will be paid from American Rescue Plan Act funds. The acceptance was contingent on the trailer in question being made completely from aluminum, to avoid the rust caused by outdoor use and road salt.

Additional ARPA funds were allocated to maintain the bus used by the Kermit’s Keweenaw Kids program. Recent repairs cost $9,000, and an additional $10,000 will be banked for future maintenance.
