The Keweenaw Co-op is pushing forward with plans to relocate to downtown Hancock.
At a joint meeting of the Hancock City Council, Downtown Development Authority and Planning Commission last evening, Co-op officials said they are close to taking ownership of the former Keweenaw Buick-GMC property on Quincy Street.
Plans call for the building to be renovated, with around 7,000 square feet of retail grocery space, at a cost of $7 million.
The Co-op hopes to raise the initial $1 million with a local campaign, and grants from the USDA and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. If that’s successful, work could begin in August.
Officials said Keweenaw Co-op sales have grown by 8.5 percent in each of the previous several years. The community-owned, natural foods outlet recorded $4.8 million in sales in 2021.
