The Keweenaw Co-op has raised more than $13,000 for the Western Upper Peninsula Food Bank over the past eight months.
The Co-op began a “round-up program” April 1st, when it became apparent that extra food would be needed by families hit by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Customers are given the option of rounding their purchase up to the next full dollar at checkout.
The money is being used by the Co-op to purchase food at wholesale cost. That food is then donated to the Food Bank for local distribution. Nearly 550 cases of food have already been delivered.
The U.P. Food Bank provides assistance for more than 50 organizations across six counties, with more than 20 of those here in the Copper Country.
