The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, you may know it simply as “HUD,” has awarded the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community $900,000 as part of their Indian Community Development Block Grant Imminent Threat Program, which helps address problems faced by Tribal residents.
The funds will be used to construct two homes, to provide temporary lodging, for families to quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, and will also help renovate home ventilation systems and an existing hotel, to house tribal members isolating.
HUD Secretary Dr. Ben Carson said “Today’s grannt announcement will help families throughout Indian Country to access essential resources amid the coronavirus outbreak.”
R. Hunter Kurtz, Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing added “From helping Tribes build more affordable housing to building a place where families can go to quarantine, this funding will help Native Americans persevere during this unprecedented time.”
