KBIC Primary Narrows Crowded Field

The ballot is almost set for next month’s Keweenaw Bay Indian Community election.

In Saturday’s primary, crowded fields of candidates were narrowed down to four competitors who will compete for two Tribal Council seats in each district.

In the Baraga District, incumbent Rodney Loonsfoot led the field with 133 votes. Michael P. Lahti collected 79 votes, Donald Chosa, Jr. 78 votes, and a tie will need to be broken between Carole LaPointe and Don Messer, Jr., who each received 53 votes.

In the Baraga District, two former Council members finished on top. Eddy Edwards collected 66 votes, and Jennifer Misegan received 56. Incumbent Gary Loonsfoot finished with 50 votes, and Jean Jokinen received 40 votes.

Incumbent Violet Friisvall-Ayres was the top vote-getter in the contest for Associate Judge, with 233 votes. She’ll face Tyler Larson, who received 206 votes.
