Junior Ranger Series Begins At Portage Lake District Library

A Local National Parks series is underway at the Portage Lake District Library, taking place every Tuesday all summer long.

Isle Royale National Park and Keweenaw Park Rangers partnered with the library to provide adventurous presentations and activities.

The program is geared towards families and kids ages five to twelve.

Keweenaw Historical Park Guide Lynette Webber said, “By the time they reach junior high school, most children have already established their patterns, their habits, their hobbies and what they like to do in their spare time. By reaching the children before they’re set in their ways, we have a much better chance of getting them interested in maintaining their heritage and our cultural and natural resources to create the stewards of the future.”

For the first presentation, Ranger Webber taught participants about what people did while visiting the Copper Country in the past 160 years.

Kids also learned how to read different historical markers around the area and were tasked with a Copper Country Scavenger Hunt.

People have all summer to complete the scavenger hunt and the first ten to finish will receive prizes.

Participant/Jr. Ranger Bruce Baith said, “ I want to thank Chris [Alquist] from the library for hosting this Ranger activities and Michigan gave me my badge to become a National Park Jr. Ranger.”

Events topics are planned until the end of July and August programs will be announced later.

Next week, participants will learn about Isle Royale beavers.
