It’s official, Line 5 is temporarily shut down, after a judge granted a motion filed by Attorney General Dana Nessel, for Canadian Oil Company Enbridge to cease all activity on the Line 5 pipeline, which carries crude oil and natural gas under the Straits of Mackinac.
Damage to the pipeline’s eastern segment was discovered on June 18th.
Enbridge stopped all activity then, but reactivated one of the lines two days later, without notifying the state.
Governor Whitmer had asked for a detailed report regarding the damage, from Enbridge, but received only a few pictures and a summary that posed more questions that it answered.
Nessel said she was very grateful for the court’s decision, even though it’s only temporary.
Both lines of the pipeline are to remain closed, until the preliminary injunction is held on Tuesday.
