The Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee has become part of the Michigan State Parks system.
State officials say the move will provide more funding opportunities for the museum, including cash for snow removal and building repairs. It will operate as a sub-unit of the Van Riper State Park, in western Marquette County.
The Michigan History Center will continue to manage the museum’s exhibits and programs.
Because it is now included in the state park system, a Michigan Recreation Passport will be required to enter the grounds.
The Iron Industry Museum opened in 1987 on the grounds of the Carp River Forge. The land was donated by the Cleveland-Cliffs Company. It also serves as a trail head for the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
