Investigation Underway Into Fulton House Fire

An investigation is underway into the cause of a house fire in Fulton last Friday that claimed the lives of two people.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office says the State Fire Marshall began his investigation on Tuesday, which may take several days to complete due to the amount of damage to the house.

An investigation was started by the Sheriff’s Office and the Keweenaw County medical examiner once the fire was contained.

Their initial findings were that the fire may have started near a wood burning stove in the basement of the residence.

When deputies arrived on the scene Friday at 393 Seneca Street, they found fire crews from Allouez Township and Ahmeek Village already working to try and put out the fire.

Several other fire departments were called to assist for water tanker and personnel support, including Calumet Township, Laurium, Eagle Harbor, Bootjack and Quincy/Franklin/Hancock Township.

The fire took several hours to contain.

The owners of the residence, 73-year-old Norman Kilpela and 79-year-old Marianne Kilpela were found deceased inside their home.
