UPDATED – Illinois Man Dies in Keweenaw County Snowmobile Crash

An Illinois man was killed in a snowmobile crash Sunday afternoon in Keweenaw County.

The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Rodney Richardson, Jr., of Aurora, Illinois.

Keweenaw County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Trail Three near Lac La Belle Road around 4:51 pm. Deputies say they were initially told it was a property damage crash, but were informed while en route that a serious injury had occurred, and that CPR was being administered.

First responders continued CPR when they arrived, but Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that Richardson was northbound on Trail Three with a group of snowmobilers when he missed a turn and left the trail. The sled became airborne, and the driver was thrown off. Officials say speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department continues its investigation.
