House Approves Water Resources Bill

A recently approved water resources bill is designed to protect the area’s natural resources and critical water infrastructure.

Congressman Jack Bergman called the House passage of the Water Resource Development Act a major win for the Great Lakes states.

“Michigan’s First District is home to our nation’s most precious natural resources and critical water infrastructure. With shoreline on Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior, no congressional district in the United States has more at stake when it comes to Great Lakes conservation and water infrastructure development, than Michigan’s First District,” said Bergman.

“This water resources bill approves additional resources to monitor for substances such as PFAS/PFOA, authorizes more work to be done to stop Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes, and authorizes a new Poe-sized Lock to be built at the Soo Locks Complex. This is another major win for the First District, and the entire state of Michigan.”

The bill authorizes the building of a new Soo Lock, advances research on eradicating invasive species such as Asian Carp and zebra mussels, takes aim at resolving toxic algal blooms in the Great Lakes; and requires the EPA to help public water systems monitor for unregulated contaminates.
