Houghton’s Fire Insurance Rating Upgraded

The City of Houghton is getting high marks from the agency that sets their Fire Insurance Rating.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara said the Insurance Services Office said the city’s Public Protection Classification was upgraded from a 6 to a 5.

Waara said that rating is used to determine fire insurance rates.

The ISO cited the Houghton Volunteer Fire Department and the city’s Building Code Enforcement as among the reasons for the higher rating.

Waara said a 5 rating moves Houghton into an elite class among cities in the country.
