Houghton Water, Sewer Rates to Rise

Water and sewer rates will be going up in Houghton.

The first increase in fees in nearly seven years will cost the average residential customer an extra $4.54 cents per month on the combined water, sewer and trash bill (from $54.58 to $59.12).

City manager Eric Waara said Houghton’s water and sewer charges will remain among the lowest in the Upper Peninsula…

The increase was actually required by the federal government as part of an upcoming water and sewer project that will be partly funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development grant.

No citizens addressed the issue during the public hearing that was held before the council voted.
