Houghton Sheriff Wary of Budget Cuts

Efforts continue in Lansing to restore some of the funding that was cut from the 2019-2020 budget by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean is following two line items…

Permanent loss of secondary road patrol funding could lead to layoffs in departments that are already thinly staffed…

The jail reimbursement program paid counties to house prisoners that would otherwise have been placed in more expensive state prisons…

Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey and House Speaker Lee Chatfield met late last week to begin working out a compromise. They’re scheduled to get together again tomorrow.

Governor Whitmer’s attempt to return to the state budget some of the items she vetoed could cost her. Some Republican legislative leaders say they might demand that she pledge not to use the State Administrative Board’s authority to transfer money within departmental budgets again – or that the board be stripped of that power.
