When do you think spring will come and sink the snowmobile into Portage Lake? Place your bets now for a chance to win the grand prize.
A vintage snowmobile (sled) was placed on the frozen Houghton Canal in early February as part of the “Sink the Sled” Contest sponsored by the Houghton Rotary Club. Tickets will be sold throughout the rest of winter until the sled sinks or up until April 15th. The winning ticket will receive 50% of the net sales up to $1,000. The remaining proceeds will support the Houghton Rotary’s scholarship program and other community activities.
To get a ticket to win you need to predict the date, hour and minute when the sled will fall through the ice and pay $5 for each guess entered or $10 for three guesses. The guess closest to the day and time of the sinking will be determined by a time stamped web cam video.
Tickets can be purchased on-line at SinkTheSled.com, from local establishments with ticket entry buckets or from a Houghton Rotarian. SinkTheSled.com also has complete contest details and rules.
Before being placed on the ice, the Johnson snowmobile was stripped of its gas tank, engine, clutch, belts and seat and steam-cleaned to make it eco-friendly. After it sinks it will be removed from the water. The Houghton Rotary “Sink the Sled” Committee coordinated this effort with the Coast Guard, Michigan DNR and Department of Environmental Quality to ensure that there would be no environmental issues or safety concerns.
The Houghton Rotary Club is a part of Rotary International which is a global network of 1.2 million members within 35,000 clubs who come together to make positive, lasting change in communities at home and abroad. Their motto is “Service Above Self” and the “Sink the Sled” fundraiser will benefit local youth and the community. For more information on Houghton Rotary go to houghtonrotary.org.
