Houghton Police Get Extra Training & Patrol Car Upgrade

The period between the graduation of the college students and before the public schools get out for the summer is typically a slow time for local law enforcement, so the Houghton Police Department has been taking advantage of the opportunity to get some additional training.

Officers took classes in how to identify motorists under the influence of substances other than alcohol.

The whole department took part in a class at Michigan Tech on non-stranger sexual assault, addressing date rape and sexual assault on campus.

Officers also took part in active shooter training and how to use pressure points to take someone into custody safely.

The Houghton Police Department will be getting an upgrade on their upcoming vehicle purchase.

Last month, the City Council approved funds for the purchase of a new patrol car.

City Manager Eric Waara said Rural Development was willing to grant enough money to purchase a Tahoe instead of an Interceptor.

USDA was expected to provide a grant for $19,000 with $16,000 matching funds from the city.

Instead, $24,000 was provided so the city approved an additional $5,000 so the larger vehicle could be purchased.

Waara said the Tahoe should last one to two years longer than the Interceptors the department is currently using.
