Houghton Police Crack Down On Cigarette Butt Littering

Throwing cigarette butts on city streets is littering.

That’s the message the Houghton Police Department is trying to get through to smokers who simply toss their cigarette butts on the ground.

Police Chief John Donnelly said his department has been handing out flyers to local businesses in hopes of curbing the habit.

Donnelly said times have changed, as have attitudes toward cigarette smoking, and the littering aspect of it is simply not acceptable anymore.

Officers are being instructed to issue tickets for tossing cigarette butts on the ground as well as for other littering offenses.
