Houghton Again Named Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community

The city of Houghton is again a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community, as named by the League of American Bicyclists.

Houghton was first awarded Bronze level in 2010, and in 2013 gained Silver status which it now maintains following its re-application last summer.

The national bike advocacy organization said the Silver level award recognizes Houghton’s commitment to improving conditions for bicycling through investment in bicycling promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies.

Ongoing planning and evaluation by the Houghton Bike and Pedestrian Committee, new bike lanes and connector paths, and wayfinding signs along the Houghton Avenue Bike Boulevard were among many bike-friendly initiatives cited in Houghton’s application.

Chair of the Houghton Bike and Pedestrian Committee Josh Myles said future plans include helping with the reconstruction of College Avenue in 2021, regional law enforcement training and the 2018 Non-Motorized Transportation plan to go along with the city’s Master Plan.

Bike and Pedestrian meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of every month at the City Center at 7:30am and are open to the public.
