The city of Houghton may be looking to relocate the city offices in the near future.
The City Center on Shelden Avenue has been home to the city council and police station since 1991, but one of the businesses in the upstairs of the building has expressed interest in buying the property.
City Manager Eric Waara says Midwest Loan Services has outgrown their office space and contacted the city about the possibility of purchasing the building.
At their regular meeting Wednesday, Waara told the city council that this may open some opportunities for the city and it’s something they should look into.
He stressed that discussions are in the very early stages and nothing has been finalized yet, but Waara said they have a lot of issues to consider if they were to move, including cost, size, and location.
After the city purchased and renovated the building nearly 30 years ago, they used the upstairs offices as a business incubator.
Waara said Midwest Loans is one of the businesses that were part of that program and now they have grown to the size that they need the entire building.
