Houghton Man Killed In Rollover Accident

One person is dead following a single vehicle crash in Calumet Township.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says the accident happened Tuesday around 4:30pm on US-41 near #4 Road in Centennial Heights.

The vehicle was driven by a 65-year-old Houghton man who sustained minor injuries. The passenger, a 77-year-old Houghton man, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

Authorities say the vehicle, a GMC S10 Blazer, was headed northbound on US-41 when the driver lost control as he went off of the paved portion of the road and traveled along the gravel shoulder.

The driver then over corrected his vehicle and lost control as he went back onto the roadway. The vehicle then slid sideways on the pavement causing it to roll over.

The driver was wearing his seatbelt but the passenger was not and he was ejected from the vehicle.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage during the crash and was towed from the scene by Superior Service Towing.

The crash remains under investigation and further details will be released at a later time.

Alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.

The sheriff’s department was assisted at the scene by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Laurium Police Department, Michigan DNR Officer, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, Mercy Ambulance and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
