Houghton High School Wins Fall 2017 Blizzard Bowl

Houghton High School took first place in the recent Fall 2017 Blizzard Bowl, with Hancock High School and West Iron County High School taking second and third place respectively.

This was the fourth Blizzard Bowl, sponsored by Michigan Tech’s Center for Pre-College Outreach and the Quiz Bowl Club. Participating schools included teams from Houghton High School, L’Anse High School, Dollar Bay High School, West Iron County High School, Hancock Central High School, Calumet High School and Jeffers High School.

Blizzard Bowl is a fast-paced trivia contest with four-player teams facing off against one another in a race to answer in-depth trivia questions. A question could challenge the teams’ knowledge of history, literature, science, math, popular culture or geography.

“I think part of the reason I like hosting high school tournaments is because I like seeing more students involved in quiz bowl and seeing the game grow,” said Casey Bindas, president of Michigan Tech’s Quiz Bowl Club.

The top eight scorers were Ann Desrochers (Houghton), Elecia Giachino (Calumet), Johan Hepokoski (Hancock), Faith Nelson (West Iron County), Jordan Wiles (Jeffers), Gwen Pasich (Calumet), Jordan Jones (L’Anse) and Kayla Hakala (Dollar Bay). Each winner received a book as a prize. Desrochers was selected by NAQT as the player of the week for her performance in the Blizzard Bowl Tournament, averaging 70 points per game.

There will be another Blizzard Bowl in Spring 2018.
