When an American family buys the manor Sir Simon tries his best to frighten them as he has others in the past only to find that the Americans don’t really take him seriously.
Not only do they not take him seriously, they humiliate him and play tricks on him, causing him to try even harder to find a way to scare them.
That’s the premise of a play called The Canterville Ghost, being performed this weekend by the Houghton High School Drama Club.
Drama Instructor Dave Crowley says the play is based on a story by 19th century playwright Oscar Wilde. “The first movie that was made of it was in the ‘40s with Charles Laughton playing the ghost,” said Crowley. “It’s had different variations like in this particular one. It’s set in kind of in the 50’s, 60’s, so it’s kind of been updated. Some of the characters are a little different than his original story but the basic story is the same.”
The play features sophomores Alice Chapman as Madam Balaklava, Ani Seigel as Virginia Washington, and the ghost of Sir Simon is played by Brian Knewtson.
“I am extremely bored and I just want to cause trouble,” said Knewtson.
Performances are this Friday and Saturday at 7:00pm and Sunday afternoon at 2:00.
Seigel said, “It is really funny and very heartwarming and we have put a lot of work into it.”
A licensed raffle with $500 in prizes will he held during the Sunday performance. Raffle tickets are available from cast members and will also be sold at the performances.
Tickets for the performances are $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students and seniors.
