Houghton County to Dedicate Airport Boulevard to Koskela – Board Meeting Wrap

The access road to the Houghton County Memorial Airport will be dedicated to the memory of former Houghton County Board of Commissioners Chair Albert Koskela.

At yesterday’s meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to place signs at both ends of Airpark Boulevard, noting Koskela’s long service to the county, which operates the airport. Commissioner Roy Britz serves on the county’s airport committee…

When I came on this board in 2019, he was a very good mentor. He showed me a lot of things, and explained things to me, and I truly appreciated it.

Britz said some consideration was given to renaming the road after Koskela, but there was concern about the disruption that would cause to businesses located in the airpark.

Commissioner Gretchen Janssen reported that recycling at the county’s transfer station is catching on…

Year to date, we’ve recycled 27 tons of material. In May, we were up 92 percent over last year in May, and in June we were up 227 percent from June of last year.

The recycling program was still in its early stages last year at this time.

On a related note, Calumet Township Supervisor Tim Gasperich reported that their recent tire recycling effort exceeded expectations…

We received a DNR grant for 1,000 tires. We’re well over that right now, so we’ll get help for 1,000 tires, and we’re going to pick up the fees on the rest of the tires.

Sheriff Josh Saaranen said his department has been busy…

We are, right now, at 1,600 complaints, about 250 more than we were last year.

Saaranen noted that the jail reached capacity recently, but the population has since ebbed a bit. He confirmed to the board that former undersheriff Kevin Coppo resigned from the department at the end of May. Coppo was arrested March 3 in Grand Traverse County, after a collision in a hotel parking lot involving a Houghton Sheriff’s Department vehicle he was driving. He has agreed to plead guilty to charges of operating a vehicle with high blood alcohol content, and failure to report an accident.
