Houghton County Planning Commission Holds Monthly Meeting

The Houghton County Planning Commission held their monthly meeting this afternoon.

The Solid Waste Committee has been looking into options for the transfer station, including providing recycling opportunities, and possibly selling or leasing it, or making modifications to it.

The new jail seems to be on hold, due to financial hardships over COVID-19.

It was noted that a millage didn’t seem feasible at this time, and that potential locations were still being scouted.

Earlier in the day, the Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 20-12, supporting compliance of applicable laws and CDC guidelines in relation to battling COVID-19.

They also reminded residents to continue wearing masks, social distancing and washing their hands.

Social Science Professor from Michigan Tech, Chelsea Schelly spoke about how people of color are discriminated against, although not necessarily intentionally.

The planning commissions next meeting is scheduled for August 18th.
