Going to the fair can be a thrilling experience–but for kids with autism, the sensory overload can be a little too much for enjoyment.
The Houghton County Fair is teaming up with the Copper Country Autism Awareness Group and the Copper Country Intermediate School District to offer a Sensory Sensitive Day at this year’s fair on August 23rd.
Parents may bring their kids to enjoy rides, the petting zoo, and games at that fair while the amount of music and lights are reduced.
The barn will open at 8:00am with the other exhibits opening at 11:00am.
From Noon to 2:00pm, kids can ride rides with a wristband.
Wristbands and gate fees are being purchased by the Copper Country Autism Awareness group and families will need to report to the Skerbeck Trailer to pick up their wristbands.
Those interested in taking part in the Sensory Sensitive Day are asked to contact Sue Antila at 906-281-3300 before August 19th to reserve your tickets and to schedule pick up.
Parents can also download a social story for families to read together prior to going to the event, along with a schedule for parents to complete to help prepare for the events at the fair.
Visuals are included that can be used by family or fair staff to help students that need additional support.
