Houghton County Election Results Recap

Funding for the Houghton County Medical Care Facility is safe for now.

In an overwhelming show of support, 80 percent of the voters approved the millage renewal for the facility, which provides nursing home care and other services to vulnerable adults who otherwise may not be able to afford it.

There will be at least one new face on the Houghton County Board of Commissioners next year–or perhaps a familiar one.

In a rematch of 2012 and 2014, Calumet’s Tom Tikkanen won the Republican primary over incumbent Eugene Londo for the District 1 seat, 53 to 47 percent.

Tikkanen was previously on the board when he was defeated by Londo in the 2014 primary.

He will now face repeat Democrat challenger Rick Kasprzak in November.

There will not be a change regarding the Houghton County Clerk.

Incumbent Jennifer Lorenz received 53 percent of the vote over 47 percent for Mary Beth Hodges in the Democrat primary.

There is not a Republican challenger.

The partnership between Chassell Township and the Portage Lake District Library will continue.

The proposal to withdraw from the library, thus ending the 2 mills levied to support it, was defeated 54 percent to 46 percent.

$2.7 million in upgrades for Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools will go forward–that bond proposal passed.

Also passing were millages for the Calumet Township Building, all four proposals in Duncan Township for Operating, Ambulance and two Fire Renewals, the General Fund and Service Fund renewals in Elm River Township, the Franklin Fire Apparatus, Franklin Road, Quincy/Franklin and Ripley Fire millages all passed.

The renewals for the Quincy Operating and Quincy Fire millages passed as well.
