Houghton County COVID Surge Continues

Houghton County continues as the COVID-19 hot spot in the latest report from the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department. 

Since their previous update was released late Thursday, 93 more positives have been confirmed in the five-county region. 68 of those are in Houghton County, with 20 in Gogebic County, three in Ontonagon County, and two in Keweenaw County. No new cases were reported in Baraga County.

No new COVID-19 deaths were reported. 101 more recoveries were confirmed.

All is quiet on the COVID-19 front at local extended care facilities. The latest reports posted yesterday by the state indicate no new resident cases at any of the centers in Houghton, Baraga or Ontonagon Counties. Gardenview in Calumet reported two new confirmed cases among staff members, and the Lighthouse at Hancock reported one.

Local hospitals are also reporting a quiet time. In yesterday’s report, Aspirus Keweenaw, Aspirus Ontonagon and Baraga County Memorial Hospital reported no COVID-19 patients. UP Health System-Portage reported three patients with the virus. None were in intensive care.
