Houghton County Commission Chair Passes

The long-time chair of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners has died.

Albert Koskela, of Traprock Valley, passed away on Sunday morning, April 24th, at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium.

Koskela’s commitment to public service also included the Copper Country Intermediate School District Board, where he served as president, and the Lake Linden-Hubbell Board of Education.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 26th, from 2:00 until 7:00 at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 at the church. The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Koskela served Houghton County District Two, which includes Franklin, Osceola, Schoolcraft and Torch Lake Townships.

By law, the Houghton County Commission must appoint a replacement within 30 days. That person will fill out the remainder of the term, which expires at the end of the year.

Koskela had not filed to run for reelection. Four candidates have submitted applications to be on the ballot in the August Republican primary.
